Share the Earth - MDG7 campaign
In Australia we take it for granted that we have food on our tables, clean drinking water in our taps and toilets that work. But for people in poor countries, these basic needs are not guaranteed.Micah Challenge believes that every person should be able to enjoy the provision of God and the good fruits of God's creation, and that Australia has a responsibility to help ensure poor countries have access to secure food, clean water and a safe climate.
MDG7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Many of the world's poorest people are facing a crisis of provision. They are no longer able to enjoy the good gifts of creation. In stark contrast to most Australians, these people rely heavily on a sustainable and productive local ecosystem in order to meet their basic survival needs - food, water and shelter. For example:• An estimated 75 million people in the Asia Pacific region alone are expected to be displaced due to the impacts of a changing climate by 2050. Entire countries, such as Kiribati and Tuvalu in the Pacific, are already becoming uninhabitable through rising sea levels and loss of fresh water supplies.
• Around the world today there are approximately 2.6 billion people without access to sanitation and
884 million without access to safe drinking water.
• Approximately 25% of the 8.1 million child deaths could be avoided by sanitation interventions alone. Thatʼs 2 million children who could be saved.

WHAT AUSTRALIA NEEDS TO DO FOR MDG7:
Australia has a responsibility to do our fair share to acheive MDG7 and ensure environmental sustainability. In order to make progress towards this important goal, our Government needs to:
1. Take a global leadership position on carbon emission targets.
2. Increase the level of aid allocated to sanitation, hygiene and water (WASH) to meet Australia's fair share of AUD $500 million per year by 2015.
3. Ensure that at least 50% of funding for WASH is allocated to sanitation.
