Offering of Letters for Kids
We encourage kids to take part in the Offering of Letters campaign. Make sure you take some time to explain the issues to your children and then encourage them to respond by writing a letter to Mr Rudd. Explain to them that their voice is important and they can help make a difference to kids in poor countries. The process can be very empowering for children.Young kids can draw a picture, while older kids can write their own words or use the suggested wording below.
Suggested wording for kids:
Dear Prime Minister,
I am writing because........
Suggested response 1:
You made a promise that you would help poor mothers and children and I would like you to keep that promise. I would hate it if people were dying from poverty and richer countries weren't doing anything about it.
Suggested response 2:
I want lives to be saved and I want to keep babies, mums and children away from sickness and to let them have a chance to live.
Body of letter:
I believe we can help stop hunger, make people healthy and save lives in poor countries.
Thank you for promising to increase the money Australia gives to the poor to 0.5% of GNI by 2015, and for trying to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
I am happy to learn that more babies now have chance to live and more children like me are in school. It is great that they get immunised because then they can be healthy like me.
But there are still 1.4 billion people who live in extreme poverty.
I know times are hard, but I ask that you remember your promise to the poor and increase the money to 0.7% by the time the next election comes around.
Please encourage the leaders of other countries to keep their promise as well.
I pray that you will have wisdom and courage as you lead Australia.
