Midwife crisis!
A Midwife crisis doesn't make for a very happy Mothers Day! Let's ensure health for mums everywhere!
On Mothers Day we are thankful for the love and sacrifice of our mothers. But this Mothers Day, Sunday 8 May, we are also encouraging churches to stop and remember the 'Midwife Crisis' that women in poor countries are facing, and advocate on their behalf.
Some mothers around the world are being asked to give more than their bodies can bear - thousands die and thousands more are left disabled as they give birth without the support of midwives or health professionals.
- Each year, there are more than 340,000 maternal deaths which are largely preventable through the presence of skilled birth attendants.
- Only about half of pregnancies and childbirths are attended by midwives and those without have a doubled risk of complications before, during or after childbirth.
- 99% of maternal deaths occur in developing countries where there is a major shortage of midwives or other skilled birth attendants.
To help you advocate for mothers this Mothers Day, we have designed a card that can be used in your church on Mother's Day as a creative petition to Kevin Rudd asking him to invest more resources in training midwives in the developing world. Due to popular demand, we have run out of stock of the printed cards. Please use the pdf file below.
