"And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read... 'The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are downtrodden, to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD... Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing'." Luke 4:16-21.

The 2010 Federal Election

1. Remember the poor this election!

There are many important issues to consider when deciding which party or candidate to vote for. This election, we must remember that Jesus preached about a kingdom where the first is last, and the last is first. We encourage you to consider the needs of others by remembering the world's poorest people when you vote.

To help you do that, we have asked the major parties for updated policies on global poverty and development. This policy report card is based on the policies the Make Poverty History Coalition believes should be adopted to improve Australia's aid program, help reduce global poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. For the sake of simplicity, and ease of reading, 12 of the most urgent and measurable policy commitments have been selected for the policy report card. These appear below.

PLEASE NOTE: Make Poverty History and Micah Challenge have summarised the stated positions and the recent record of each of the major party groupings for each policy call. Micah Challenge and Make Poverty History do not support any particular political party, we provide this information as an aid to the public to help them determine which party will do the most to support international development.

2. Ask The Poverty Question

Click here to take part in a special campaign action that asks the question 'Will you remember the world's poorest people this election?'

Ask it of yourself, ask it of your friends and ask it of your politicians.

3. Attend a Make Poverty History Election Forum

Every minute 20 children die from preventable causes and every minute counts if we are to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

There are still a number of Make Poverty History forums being run in electorates. This is an effective way to engage the public, federal MPs and candidates in a constructive way on how to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and halve global poverty.
