“Give generously to the needy and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and everything you put your hand to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:11
We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: be reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:20
Christ's ambassadors bring a message of reconciliation: right relationship with God opens the way for reconciliation with one another.
When asked about the greatest commandment in the Law, Christ answered that all the Law and the Prophets hang on just two commandments - to love God with our entire being and to love our neighbour as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-40) Paul also states that the entire law is summed up in a single command: Love your neighbour as yourself. (Galatians 5:14)
In being reconciled with God we embrace a responsibility to love one another in a manner worthy of Christ. It is our love for one another that truly sets us apart as people who belong to Jesus: Jesus who instructed His disciples first to be reconciled with their brother before leaving their gifts at the altar (Matthew 5:23-24) and the Jesus who chastised the Pharisees because they had given their tithe but neglected justice and the love of God (Luke 11:42).
