Pacific in trouble on MDGs

UN: Achieving MDGs by 2015 still feasible

16 September 2008 - The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight anti-poverty targets agreed upon by world leaders in 2000, are still on course to be achieved by their 2015 deadline, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today.

"If we are united in mobilizing political will and necessary resources, I think we can achieve these Goals by 2015," Mr. Ban told UN Radio and the News Centre. Click here to read the article.

World Bank warns of MDGs shortfalls

The World Bank has launched a new report discussing the Millennium Development Goals. The 2008 Global Monitoring Report, MDGs and the Environment—Agenda for Inclusive and Sustainable Development, warns that most countries will fall short on the goals.

"In this Year of Action on the MDGs, I am particularly concerned about the risks of failing to meet the goal of reducing hunger and malnutrition, the 'forgotten MDG'. As the report shows, reducing malnutrition has a 'multiplier' effect, contributing to success in other MDGs including maternal health, infant mortality, and education", said Robert B. Zoellick, World Bank President

Maternity mortality gap 'widening in developing nations'

A BBC News article quoting a parliamentary committee says "of all the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations, the aim of reducing maternal mortality has seen least progress". Micah Challenge statement on Zimbabwe 2007

Micah Challenge International has released a statement in response to the current situation in Zimbabwe.
