UN Summit on the MDGs
20-22 Sept 2010, New York
"We must not fail the billions who look to the international community to fulfill the promise of the Millennium Declaration for a better world. Let us meet in September to keep the promise." - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Why is the UN Summit important?
Time is running out! With only five years left until the 2015 target date to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), this Summit will bring together world leaders to review progress, identify gaps, and commit to a concrete action agenda to achieve the MDGs and internationally agreed development goals.A decade ago, the world joined together in making a promise to halve global poverty by 2015. Since then there have been many success stories. A number of countries have seen a reduction in the total numbers of people living in poverty without access to basics such as education, clean water and adequate health care. However, progress has been uneven and it appears that several of the Goals are likely to be missed in many countries.

Who is attending the Summit?
The Summit will be attended by over 100 world leaders, who will be joined by leaders from citizen activist groups, various NGOs and representatives from the private sector. New Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Kevin Rudd MP will attend the forum as Australia's representative. This is an important event concerning the future of the worlds poor. Australia must play a vital role in making sure the MDGs are achieved.
Why is the summit significant to Micah Challenge?
Micah Challenge seeks to empower the Australian church and all Christians to pursue justice for the poor by advocating for the MDGs. We believe that the world has the resources, knowledge, and capabilities to ensure that all countries achieve the promise of the MDGs. The summit represents a vital opportunity for us as Christians to raise this prophetic message with our world's leaders. What are we asking?
At Voices for Justice, we began to lobby politicians about the MDG summit and presented them with 'UN Summit packs' at appointments. Now, in the lead up to the summit, Micah Challenge and Make Poverty History are proposing a 10 step MDG Summit Action Plan aimed at ensuring the Outcome Document that countries will decide on in New York is a real action agenda.
